Charles Henry is an ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical
treatment of Glaucoma.
He was born in California and raised in Little Rock, graduating from
Hall High School in 1972.
He was awarded a B.S. degree from Rhodes College (Southwestern at Memphis)
and then received his M.D. degree from the University of Arkansas Medical
School where he also served his internship.
After three years of Ophthalmology residency at the University of Tennessee
in Memphis, he was accepted as a Glaucoma Fellow at the University of
Pennsylvania (Scheie Eye Institute) and then returned to Little Rock to
join his father, Dr. J. Forrest Henry and Dr. Cliff Clifton in private
practice.
In 1987, Dr. Henry was the first Arkansan elected to membership in the
American Glaucoma Society. He has served as the President of the Arkansas
Ophthalmological Society and as Chief of the Ophthalmology Section of
the Baptist Hospital. For two years he edited the glaucoma section of
Focal Points (a publication of the American Academy of Ophthalmology).
Recently he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the American
Academy of Ophthalmology in recognition of 10 years of presentation and
service at the National Annual Meeting.
Dr. Henry has published over a dozen articles, written book chapters, and serves
on the Speaker's Bureau for several pharmaceutical companies. He lectures frequently
at regional and statewide educational programs. His areas of research include
post-operative pressure elevation, effects of corneal thickness on IOP measurement
and clinical drug studies. He participated in drug studies that led to the commercial
release of new glaucoma products such as Iopidine, Alphagan, and Travatan.
Dr. Henry has donated his time as a Visiting Faculty member for ORBIS
International, a non-profit organization that utilizes an operating room
in a DC-10 jet to teach eye surgery in lesser-developed countries. Field
missions include Ecuador, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Peru, Sudan, Bulgaria,
and Cuba. He has also volunteered in Santarem, Brazil and Ometepec, Mexico.
Dr. Henry is married to Sarah and they have three children, Elizabeth,
William, and Robert. All three children are active in sports ranging from
ice hockey to volleyball. The family attends Trinity Episcopal Church.
In his spare time, Dr. Henry enjoys tennis and woodworking. He raises
bees and his first honey crop from the Cypress Bend Apiary won the blue
ribbon and "Best of Show" at the 1995 Arkansas State Fair. Since
then, the honey has won awards every year it has been exhibited.
